More about St. Teresa's Hospital

St. Teresa's Hospital founded by Sisters of St. Paul, history can chase back to 1696. Been through couple centuries of development and wars, Sisters of St. Paul once dismissed during French revolution in 1790.

In 1848, the four Sisters accepted the invitation from Bishop Forcade – the Prefect Apostolic of Hong Kong. They arrived in Hong Kong in September 1848 and established the "Asile de la Sainte Enfance" in Wan Chai, taking care of the abandoned baby girls. From an orphanage, it expanded to a school and home for aged women. 1898, the Sisters opened a hospital in “Asile de la Sainte Enfance” to provide medical service for the needy.

As the demand continuously grew, the Sisters built the “Le Calvaire” at Happy Valley in 1908 to extend their service.

In 1916, the Sisters gradually moved their hospital from Wan Chai to Causeway Bay. The hospital was formally renamed as St. Paul’s Hospital in 1918 which marked the beginning of a new era in providing healthcare service.

Because such a good feedback and support by Hong Kong citizen on St. Paul’s Hospital, the Sisters applied to government in building another hospital in Kowloon city. And St. Teresa's Hospital was built in 1940. At first, it was only a 4-story building. With the sharp increase of medical need after war, the hospital kept expending in blocks and build nursing school. By 1985, North Wing reconstruction was finished and many new units start providing services such as Haemodialysis Unit, 24 hours service in the General Out-Patient Department, Fiberscopic Endoscopy Unit, Ophthalmic Unit, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and other specialize health care services for the needy.

With the opening of the main block in 2002, hospital service became more comprehensive include new centre/unit such as Eye and Refractive Surgery Centre and Inauguration of Endoscopy Centre. In 2007, jointed with St. Paul hospital and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, they started up a bachelor course for nursing, become the first nursing school providing bachelor degree.
